  • Tetsuya Sasaoka gave presentation at ACM Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces (IUI) 2024

    2024.3.19

Tetsuya Sasaoka of our group gave presentation at ACM Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces (IUI) 2024, which was held in Greenville, South Caroline in United States.

There is a waterfall right in the center of the city. The conference venue is a hotel behind the Bank of America building seen in the middle of the photo below.

Our presentation was a poster presentation.
Our research focuses on searching for documents in a non-native language—for example, when a Japanese speaker searches for academic papers in English. We compared three different ways to display snippets in search results:

    • Showing the original text as is.
    • Showing a fully machine-translated version.
    • Showing the original text with some keywords translated.

Our experiment found that the third method led to faster decision-making, even though it increased the number of incorrect clicks. As a result, users were able to reach their target documents in the shortest amount of time.

In the photo below, the attendees listening to the presentation is Prof. Margaret Barnett, who was one of the keynote speakers at this conference.

During the presentation time, people kept coming and going, making it a pretty busy session.

In front of the waterfall in the first photo, there is a curved suspension bridge hanging at an angle, allowing you to view the waterfall from above.

A walking path runs along the river flowing from the waterfall, and the area is lined with houses that have a very “classic American” feel.

There are plenty of geese, ducks, ducks, and small birds whose names I don’t know. Geese, in particular, seem to be everywhere!
